As you guys know I have been making my own laundry detergent. I was unable to find washing soda anywhere and have been subbing with baking soda. But I have noticed that my clothes have a bit of a "dingy" look. I have determined that this is due to not using the washing soda. So I called Arm and Hammer (Dwight and ?)- you can find their number online- you can order it directly through them! And they give you either 10% off or free shipping, your choice.
So anyway I ordered a case of washing soda. A box is 55 oz and the cost is 3.99 a box a case of 12 is 47.88. It was cheaper for me to take the free shipping so for 50.75 ( including tax ) I am getting a whole case of washing soda that should very well last me a long, long time. So I suggest that you follow the recipe and don't substitute baking soda for washing soda.
1 bar soap (ivory or fels naptha) - currently I am using Ivory since I already had several bars of that at home. You will want to grate it - just use a regular grater.
1/2 c Arm and Hammer Washing Soda
1/2 c Borax
I use it in a powdered formula but there are a lot of recipes on the web that show you how to cook it into a liquid formula if you prefer. Use 2 T of this per load. There is no need for any fabric softener when you use this. Unless you just prefer.
